Why Orbit

Most AI tools want to be the destination. Orbit wants to be the desk you sit at - local-first, model-agnostic, and quiet enough to think in. We build the workspace; you bring the API key and the intent.

i.

Power, not friction.

Orbit assumes you came to work. Every screen prioritizes the next step, not the upsell. No prompts to upgrade, no model-routing tax, no inference resold back to you at a markup.

ii.

Local before cloud.

Your notes, your agents, your skills - all stored on the device you own. Cloud sync is opt-in and BYO. The default is a private workspace that survives without us.

iii.

Two minds, one room.

Operator mode for people who want answers. Architect mode for people who want a real terminal and tokens they can touch. Both live in the same workspace, one keystroke apart.

02 - The CollectiveOrbit
Two surfaces, one app

Orbit ships two modes inside the same workspace. Operator hides the agent loop entirely - plain English in, plain English out. Architect gives you a real terminal, parallel runs, and a diff-review gate before anything is written.

Operator.

No terminal. No JSON. No raw error traces. Orbit translates everything before it reaches you, and background agents finish without asking for permission to exist.

  • Natural-language interface to Claude
  • Background agents you never have to babysit
  • Calm progress updates - never alarming, never technical
  • Friendly token-budget meter, no math

Architect.

The full developer surface. Multi-tab PTY shell, file explorer, parallel agent runs, a code editor that talks to Claude, and a diff gate before any file is touched.

  • Real PTY terminal with multiple sessions
  • Plan → review → execute with diff approval gates
  • Parallel agent runs in tab strips
  • BYO API key - Anthropic, Google, OpenAI
03 - SurfacesOrbit
What lives inside

Orbit is a command center. The cockpit sits at the top, a knowledge layer behind it, a builder beside it, and a marketplace one tab away. Every surface is local-first and works without a cloud account.

The Command Center.

A single cockpit for parallel agent runs, the live token budget, and the plan + review + execute loop. Watch every run, intervene any time, ship when the diff looks right.

  • Energy bar shows token budget at a glance
  • Parallel agent manager with tab strips
  • Plan, review, execute gate before any write
  • Operator and Architect surfaces, one keystroke apart

Cortex.

Orbit's native knowledge layer. Drop in notes, link memories, watch patterns surface as you work. Cortex injects the right context into the right prompt, automatically, with a Sonnet reranker behind the scenes.

  • Notes, memories, and a live link graph
  • Auto context injection per chat and per mode
  • Emerge: pattern detection across your workspace
  • Reactive mode switching when the topic shifts

Agent Architect.

Build your own skills and agents inside Orbit. Author a markdown file, pick a model, pick tools, and your agent is live. No deploy step, no CLI, no YAML server config. Ship it private, share with your team, or publish to the Vault.

  • Author skills and agents in plain Markdown
  • Per-skill model routing and tool allowlists
  • Test runs with a real diff preview
  • One-click publish to the Vault

04 - BenefitsOrbit
What you actually get

Most AI workspaces lock you to one provider, store your data on their servers, and rent you back your own work. Orbit inverts all three.

IndexedDB · no backend
Benefit 01

Local-first by design.

Cortex notes, agent runs, vault installs, and chat history live in IndexedDB on your machine. Nothing is uploaded by default. If we vanish tomorrow, your workspace keeps running.

  • Everything stored locally - IndexedDB, no backend
  • Optional BYO Drive sync on the roadmap
  • Full JSON export, anytime, no migration tooling

  • Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, OpenAI - first-class
  • Keys live in your device's secure storage
  • Per-skill model routing if you want it

A letter

“I built Orbit because every AI workspace I tried was either a marketing site with a chatbot bolted on, or a CLI dressed up in tabs. I wanted a desk - calm, local, two minds at the same keyboard.”

Background

Graphic design first, software engineering second. Ten years shipping product UIs that didn't look like product UIs.

Why solo

No team, no PM, no roadmap committee. The site you're reading and the app it points to were both designed and shipped by one person.

08 - FAQOrbit
Anything else?
Do I need an API key to use Orbit?+

Yes. Orbit is BYO key. Bring your own Anthropic, Google, or OpenAI key and it stays on your device. We don't proxy or resell inference.

Where is my data stored?+

Locally. Cortex notes, agent runs, skills, and vault installs all live in your browser's IndexedDB / local storage. No backend. Optional BYO-cloud sync for Drive is on the roadmap.

How is this different from Claude Code on its own?+

Orbit wraps Claude Code in a full command center: a parallel-run agent manager, a live token-budget energy bar, the Cortex knowledge layer, the Agent Architect builder, and the Vault marketplace. Operator mode also makes the same capabilities usable for non-technical work.

What does Cortex do, exactly?+

Cortex is Orbit's native knowledge layer. You drop in notes, it links related memories, and it injects the right context into the right prompt automatically. A Sonnet-class reranker chooses what to surface per chat and per mode. Emerge surfaces patterns and unlinked connections as you work.

Can I build my own skills and agents?+

Yes. Agent Architect is the in-app builder. Author a markdown skill, pick a model, pick tools, and ship it private or publish to the Vault. No deploy step, no CLI, no server config.

What's on the roadmap?+

An Electron desktop build with bundled local services, Stripe Connect for Vault payouts, Drive sync, and a public Skill SDK so anyone can publish.

Will my Vault skills work across teams?+

Pro is single-seat. Team adds a shared skill and agent library across your seats with usage analytics. Enterprise adds SSO and audit logs.
